Peaks, Paddles, and Pop-Ups: Mountains to Surf Camp

Are you starting to wonder what you’re going to do this summer? Are you deciding upon whether you should take a trip to the mountains or go to the beach?

Our Mountains to Surf Teen Adventure Camp offers the best of both worlds. This trip is designed for those seeking the majesty of mountains, rivers, and lush forest canopy, as well as the beauty of the ocean, waves, and sandy beach. Get a taste of the mountain life for a week as you explore the Great Smoky Mountains before indulging in a week at the beach exploring the southeastern coast of North Carolina. Learn to balance life by using the tranquil mountain mentality to ease into “the stoke” of riding waves while discovering the surfer within.

During the first hitch of this two-week camp, experience thrilling class III whitewater on the Nantahala River, home to the International Canoe Freestyle World Cup. Set up camp in riverside cabins at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Gear up to shred a mountain bike along the single-track trails of Tsali Recreation Area, where the freedom to pedal your heart out and cruise the winding trails and streams with sweeping views of Lake Fontana will leave you breathless. Considered to be one of the Top 10 places to ride in the USA, Tsali Recreation Area contains nearly forty miles of well-used hard-packed single-track mountain bike trails.

You will spend a leisurely day hiking alongside Deep Creek as you view amazing waterfalls and some of the more than 240 species of birds found throughout the park. At the Nantahala Outdoor Center we’ll also challenge our limits and the elements on the zip line at the Adventure Park. Face your fears as you conquer the heights and balance yourself while climbing wobbling sky bridges and scaling tight ropes. How about finishing a day with a communal bonfire playing drums, telling stories, and of course, making smores! You can also expect to be kept busy engaging in all kinds of fun, from playing games of corn-hole, exploring the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, refreshing dips in spring-fed lakes, and discovering the culture and heritage of the Cherokees. What more could one ask for? How about another week of adventure with WB Surf Camp?

After breaking camp we’ll head back to the coast where the sun and waves will be calling our names. Spend the second half of the adventure receiving top-notch daily surf instruction on the beautiful waters of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Our certified team is experienced, knowledgeable, friendly, and will guide you through our safe, effective progression. We’ll set-up in air-conditioned cabins at the KOA campground and take day trips to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital on Topsail Island, swing by the SOD Surfboard Factory to learn how boards are made, and visit a local surf shop to get a lesson on surfboard surfing history. We will also be immersed in the world of marine biology with a visit to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Each day you will take part in beach clean ups, learn all that you can about ocean conservation, and experience the WB Surf Camp stoke as we catch waves all week, go out for dinner every night, and return to our nightly campfires. Surf and Lifeguard Camp

Looking to earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification this summer while learning how to surf? WB Surf Camp has the perfect solution that combines these to ambitions two while adding marine science and coastal conservation education with the experience of a lifetime. Most certification classes are long and boring and have teachers struggling to maintain the full attention from students. Not here! With our camp, an entire full week of surfing before class even starts, the Lifeguard Certification classes are taken over the course of a week, with surf breaks in between. This active schedule ensures that students stay focused while learning everything possible in and out of the classroom.

In our “learn by doing” Lifeguard Camp, students will fine-tune the ability to predict, select, and judge waves. The program is designed for absolute beginners to intermediate surfers ages 15-17 that want to become educated in saving lives and learning skills that make them eligible for jobs all over the United States. When the campers are not participating in our lifeguard training, they will be spending time in the warm waters of Surf City and Wrightsville Beach improving their surfing skills from our professionally trained instructors.

Activities include:

  • Extensive daily surfing instruction at perfect beginner beach breaks
  • Taking a marine biology tour of the North Carolina Aquarium
  • Learning about turtle rehabilitation at the world renowned Sea Turtle Hospital
  • Discovering how surf boards are made during a guided surfboard factory tour
  • Earning your American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification
  • Learning professional lifeguard responsibilities
  • Practicing USLA approved ocean rescue methodologies
  • Becoming eligible for fun summer jobs such as a pool lifeguard or camp counselor

Our camp includes accommodations for the two weeks at the Wilmington KOA campground in air-conditioned cabins, all meals, 24 hour same gender adult supervision, shuttles to and from the Wilmington International Airport (ILM), equipment, American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, professional surfing instruction (3:1 student to instructor ratio), daily transportation, and more! California’s Wild & Wonderful Central Coast

Seeking a trip-of-a-lifetime? Look no further! Our California Teen Surf and Adventure Camp is just the place for you.

This incredible opportunity was created for those who love both the ocean and the mountains. Throughout this epic summer camp, you will surf the uncrowded stretches of the iconic California coast. Beginning at Morro Rock, an extinct volcano covering 50 feet at its base and rising 576 feet above the ocean surface, and stretching north from Morro Bay to Big Sur, the surfing on the Central Coast is incredible. This diverse coastline will supply campers with many hours of water time where you’ll see improvement with each wave you ride. Throughout this two week adventure, you’ll learn how to paddle into your own waves, ride down the line, and catch more waves than you ever imagined!

We will be venturing out for not only the best waves at our favorite uncrowded beaches, but filling the days with many other fantastic activities. One day will be spent visiting the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium where thousands of plants and animals are displayed, representing 623 species. We will hike and kayak Morro Bay, California’s last remaining estuary, where we’ll discover hundreds of species of marine, mammal, and bird species all living together in a harmonious ecosystem. The pine-wooded trails that are part of the Santa Lucia Mountains that rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean provide photo-ops around every bend as we hike through Montaña de Oro. If your body is in need of a little TLC after all this excursion, never fear! We will warm up each night to a warm fire under the stars.

Our cabin lodging at Camp Ocean Pines is nestled within 13 acres of tranquil woods just outside Cambria, CA. This is where the Monterey Pines meet the coastline. From here, you will be able to view the sun set over the Pacific while watching the playful seals on the rocks below. Our other ‘homesteads’ will be our Mega Tents near the Big Sur River at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and beside the estuary at Morro Bay State Park. Nicknamed the ‘mini-Yosemite’, Pfeiffer Big Sur offers 1,006 acres of land, best known for the lush redwood groves and scenic trail to Pfeiffer Falls.
