Who wants to go to our Kids Summer Camp??

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

I have to admit, I really want to go to Guppy Camp. I have worked at Surf Camp for almost a year, have taken Surfing Lessons with my husband, attended one of our awesome Day Camps at Wrightsville Beach, successfully learned to pop up, managed to catch a few amazing waves, but I REALLY want to go to Guppy Camp! The only problem is that the program is for 6 – 10 year olds, so they won’t let me. You might wonder why I want to spend a week of summer with kids in a program that I am far too old for… But if you talked to the moms (and dads) that I talk to every day as I answer the office phone, you would want to go too! As camper’s parents and grandparents contact us throughout the year to sign up for camp, or to ask questions, they have so many tremendous things to say about their Guppy’s experiences at camp that I can’t help but feel jealous!

Guppy Camp

Every day of Guppy Camp is action packed with cool activities like boogie boarding, paddle boating, visiting the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, learning how the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital rehabilitates sea turtles, learning to play a ukulele, fishing, clamming and crabbing in the marsh, playing fun games on the beach…the list goes on and on. Even the van rides in between activities sound fun due to all the games! Not only is Guppy Camp fun, but it teaches campers about basic ocean safety, Junior First Aid, marine life, rip currents, the importance of protecting our environment… this list goes on and on too! It’s amazing that you can learn so much and have a super fun week; for nine sessions each summer, Guppy Camp does exactly that!

Chelsea Thornhill and Rick Civelli do a great job hiring Guppy Camp Staff that love both children and the ocean, are great role models and have the stamina to push boogie boarders into waves all summer long. After they interview a ton of folks, they hire the cream of the crop, make sure the new staffers acquire the proper certifications (Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid), and train them extensively in house. They then send them off to have fun filled weeks with kids; their ultimate mission being to change camper’s lives forever. Based on the phone calls and emails I receive, I would say that they do a first-class job (which leaves me wanting to be a Guppy!)

If you have a 6 – 10 year old that might be interested in Guppy Camp, call me! I’d love to send you our Guppy Camp Catalog, and put you in contact with some previous Guppies and their parents!

2009 Guppy Summer Camp Catalog Released

Monday, May 18th, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wrightsville Beach, NC, May 14, 2009

WB Surf Camp is excited to unveil its 2009 Guppy Ocean Safety Adventure Camp catalog. A high resolution copy can be downloaded by clicking HERE.   We know that a child’s first experience with the ocean will shape their attitude towards it for the rest of their life.  This program builds confidence and ocean safety awareness one step at a time. This is not your typical “day care” summer camp.  Guppy Camp is a highly educational, action-packed, full-day, week-long adventure for kids ages 6 – 10!

Between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, Guppies will be boogie boarding, swimming, clamming, crabbing, fishing, seine-netting, canoeing, playing the ukulele, exploring, learning, and making new friends.  During the week, campers will visit the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, as well as visit many other fun-filled locations.  Guppies will also be educated on American Red Cross Basic Aid Training, ocean safety, rip current awareness, marine life, wave dynamics, conservation, weather, importance of fitness, and much more! Kids will leave with a new found level of comfort in the water and a well-rounded knowledge of the ocean! This camp has a 4:1 student to staff ratio and is the perfect precursor to one of our many learn-to-surf programs.  Guppy Camp is offered for ten weeks throughout June, July, and August.   Scholarships are available!  An application can be downloaded by clicking HERE

My First Year as a Surf Instructor at Surf Camp

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The weather was getting warmer, I only had a couple more weeks left of school, and I was stuck inside at my current job. I love the outdoors, especially the beach, and here I was spending the majority of my time indoors. I knew I needed a change and suddenly, I remembered one of my friends had worked for WB Surf Camp one summer and had a great time. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of applying to Surf Camp earlier. I sent over my resume and required applicant information, got called for an interview and received the position of Surf Instructor! I was beyond excited (and a little nervous because there was A LOT of training involved).

I showed up at the first day of training unsure of what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised when I found out how nice all of the other instructors were.  Everyone hit it off instantly. Half of our training was spent indoors and the other half was spent at the beach where we gained valuable lifeguard training techniques and participated in team building activities. By the final day of training, it felt like I had known the other instructors for much longer than a week.  We were all having a great time and couldn’t wait to start working together.

The first camp that I was scheduled to work was a Wrightsville Beach Kids Surf Camp, and I was both excited and nervous when I showed up on the first day. I was so excited to get to share my love of surfing with the campers, but was also a little nervous just because it was a new experience for me. Luckily, Rick, the founder of Surf Camp, was there to put everyone at ease and make sure that both campers and instructors were having a great time. That first week of camp turned out to be such a rewarding experience because of how much the kids got out of it. They would come back each morning that week, stoked to get back on their boards and start a full day of surfing again. I will never forget that first week of Surf Camp.  It was the first time I was able to help someone who had never surfed before experience how great surfing can be. It was almost as if I was catching my first wave all over again.

That first week of camp really set the tone for the rest of the summer as it was equally as fun and rewarding. I never imagined that I could have a job that allowed me to work with my friends, meet people from all over the world, spend my days in the warm ocean water, and help others catch that first magical wave on a surfboard. This past summer was by far the best summer I have ever had here in Wilmington and I consider myself lucky that I got to be a part of the Surf Camp Team. Summer 2009 is right around the corner……..I hope to see you in the water!
