Instructor Spotlight, May 2012: Nikki Harth

As our company expands, so do the number of instructors that come to us from around the country. We are super stoked to welcome one of the newest additions hailing from the west coast to the WB Surf Camp team this year, Nikki Harth. Steeped in the surfing culture of southern California, Nikki has roots in Norway, but his Aloha spirit, love of surfing, and eagerness to share it with others shines through in his warm personality which will get passed on to hundreds of campers this summer. Nikki will be coming on board as Assistant Director to our WB Overnight Teen Camps and Day Camps. We can’t wait!

What drew you to a position at WB Surf Camp? I am a recent graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in California, and I want to get into the surf tourism industry, and a surf camp is a great way to start!

Who is your favorite surfer and why? Taj Burrow. Such fluid style and progressive.

When did you start surfing and where? I learned to surf when I was 10, but didn’t really get into it until I was 14. And my dad taught me in my local town, Encinitas, California.

What is your favorite surf break? Rincon, Santa Barbara. It’s the perfect wave.

What inspired you to start surfing? My dad and brother would go all the time, and would always come back with such big smiles. My passion for the water allowed me to feel comfortable out in the lineup and I got the bug, and 11 years later I can’t imagine my life without surfing in it.

Where was your most memorable session? My roommate and I drove to Santa Barbara at 3:00 am, paddled out at Rincon at 5:00am under a full moon and surfed for over an hour by just the moonlight. Got my first night barrel. It was an epic trip!

What is the worst wipeout you’ve ever had? In Nicaragua the lip of the wave hit me in the chest while I was pulling into the barrel and I got sucked over the falls twice and then pinned on the sand and dragged for another 20 yards or so. Only injury was a sand burn on my collar bone.

What are some of your interests outside of surfing? Hiking, biking, camping, swimming, fishing, volleyball, soccer, and anything else outdoors.

What is your favorite movie? Anchorman, but surf movie is Fair Bits.

What is your favorite music? The Tallest Man on Earth, Mumford and Sons, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and anything else but country.

What is your favorite food? Mexican food, especially a California Burrito.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully owning and running a successful surf camp in a tropical location.

In your eyes, the three things you value most are: Friends and Family, Outdoor recreation and play, Education

Instructor of the Week for 4/23/12: Ben Goodpasture

Starting as an Assistant Director on WB Surf Camp’s Overnight and Day Camp teams, Ben Goodpasture has continued sharing his summers and passion for life and the ocean with aspiring surfers. Last year he lead our Specialty SCUBA Camps and will be leading our California Teen Travel Camp this year. With an eye for photography and an ear for good music, Ben is a passionate individual who’s not afraid to share his love of life and stoke with others.

1. What drew you to a position at WB Surf Camp? I am coming back to Surf Camp for the third year, because of the people. I love the heart behind WB Surf Camp, it attracts greatness. WB Surf Camp is a family of extraordinary people, living with purpose and promoting positive change in the community. And, it’s fun!

2. Who is your favorite surfer and why? My friend Glen is my favorite surfer to watch. The guy is mental. He loves to “Hulk out” on the waves. But most of all, he is really funny, always making people laugh. Funniest guy I know.

3. When did you start surfing and where? I started surfing at Kure Beach, North Carolina when I was 3 or 4 years old, hanging on to my dad’s back. The stoke just grows and never stops.

4. What is your favorite surf break? Puerto Escondido, Mexico because that wave terrifies me. I watched a wave break beside me in the water, a truck could fit inside the barrel. The rip currents are wild. If the beach break is too crazy, the point is really fun and not so intense. The tacos are amazing too!

5. What inspired you to start surfing? Perfect Waves.

6. Where was your most memorable session? La Punta, Mexico. Some of the most perfect waves that I have ever seen were coming in that morning. A crew of us were trading waves with long rides. The waves were consistently ten feet and glassy, giving us two-hundred yard long rides. The water was crystal clear, there were fish everywhere, and hundreds of pelicans were dive bombing all around us. It was wild.

7. What is the worst wipeout you’ve ever had? I was surfing at a reef in Costa Rica when a rogue wave came in and the lip of the wave crashed on my head. The power of the wave broke my leash and I was swimming without a board. After two more waves and a lot of foam, I made it in exhausted.

8. What are some of your interests outside of surfing? I love traveling, rock climbing, paddle boarding, camping, photography, reading, playing games and last but not least, sleeping in hammocks.

9. What is your favorite movie? This is always changing, but most recently I watched All.I.Can. It’s the most creative ski movie out. Also, On the Trail of Genghis Khan is an epic documentary about a brave guy, taking three years to travel across the open country of Asia on a horse. That is crazy town.

10. What is your favorite music? Kiley Hill, Sara Oliveira and Chris Molitor are friends of mine that inspire me with their passion and creativity.

11. What is your favorite food? Fresh fruit and shrimp tacos

12. Where do you see yourself in five years? Living on the coast somewhere beautiful with a community of friends, traveling a lot, and doing the impossible.

13. In your eyes, the three things you value most are: Unconditional love, courage and faith.
