With the help of technology and transportation, numerous regions of the world are accessible through the luxury of travel. Whether by plane, automobile, or boat, more travelers are reaching vast distances.  Through preparation, planning, and perhaps most importantly, a strong sense for adventure, there are few limitations as to where we can travel. From snow covered mountain peaks in the Himalayas to outer reefs in Indonesia, it’s up to each traveler to choose their method to reach their final destination. When recalling a travel experience, rarely is the destination the highlight of the memory. It’s the people you meet, food you eat, and things you learn along the way that make the trip one of a kind.

Geography, art, religion, and history are worldly goods that a traveler experiences first hand while on their journey. With nearly 195 countries worldwide, each has different laws, beliefs, and methods of living life. Through immersion, observation, and understanding, a traveler has the opportunity to live, breathe, and taste the diversity of different cultures.

With the right attitude and mindset, one can learn more from traveling than they would from many other educational experiences. Speak the language, taste the food, use public transportation, and engage with the locals. By fully immersing oneself, you gain the most out of the experience.  The resultof traveling is further self-discovery, better understanding of our world, and a gained perspective of life and what’s truly important.

Taking the step of breaking away from daily routine and venturing into the unfamiliar is the first part of the process. By seeing new places and trying new things, a spark ignites for adventure that teaches one to expand their horizons and think outside the box. Regardless of distance traveled, exposure to different cultures and landscapes create a further sense of understanding for the world we live in.

As a surf instructor with Surf Camp Inc, I have been fortunate enough to travel through multiple countries while teaching surfing and sharing my love for the Ocean. The friends I meet and experiences I gain  along the way enrich my life. They shape my outlook on life and further develop my passion for exploration.  From lucid blue waters in the British Virgin Islands, to blazing sunsets over the Pacific in Costa Rica, each location is unique, containing its own beauty. When I travel, I feel most alive. My focus is on the present as I break the mold of uniform routine. Every moment brings new faces, landscapes, cuisine, and opportunities for learning. Each time I return home with new friends, memories, and a fresh perspective on life.

WB Surf Camp recently returned from an epic surf trip to the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica with huge smiles and a crew of super stoked clients. This year’s Adult Costa Rica Surf Adventure was an incredible week full of clean swell, great adventure, and awesome sunrise and sunset sessions. The words “best trip ever” have been thrown around more than a few times by everyone that went.

With a diverse group ranging in age and profession, this year’s clients consisted of several medical, recreational, and financial professionals, a boat captain and a lawyer (soon to be judge!) As diverse as it was, everyone gelled immediately and every moment in and out of the water was just incredible. It is said that a huge part of travelling is the company you keep, and for this trip, nothing could have been truer. What was even more special was the hometown contingency with half of the clients hailing from Wilmington, NC. Every moment was full of great company and lively conversation over cold drinks and fresh grilled mahi.

While the beginners spent most days developing their foundational surfing skills in the gentler waves of the Tamarindo River Mouth, the experienced surfers explored some of the more advanced breaks of the area. The best part about the Guanacaste region is the diversity of surf that exists within a short distance of Tamarindo. Anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours in either direction you can find peeling points over rocky reef, grinding beach breaks, and even the world class river mouth, Witchs Rock. The founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, says that it’s not an adventure until something goes wrong, but we beg to differ. In true WB Surf Camp fashion, we took full advantage of all the natural resources to fully appreciate the land, the culture, and most importantly the people. From the locally run hotel, to the gorgeous beach horseback ride, to zip lining through the rainforest canopy, we got to see Costa Rica from every angle. Between the howler monkeys, an amazing Haiti benefit fiesta, hours of saltwater time logged, and fresh mahi and tuna at nearly every meal, everyone received the full Costa Rican experience.

Jason, Jimmy and I decided to sleep in (if you call 8:00 am sleeping in). When you have a 2 year-old and an 8 month old at home you could not sleep past 7:00 am if you tried. With an unreal swell on the way and double sessions for the next 6 days, the rest would definitely be needed. We spent most of the day running errands, checking on eateries, reviewing client backgrounds, double checking flights and prepping rooms for everyone’s arrival. By 4:00 pm all was accounted for, including luggage.

We caught up on the past year, met new faces and all went or a surf. Tonight the surf was small, around waist high so everyone just got loosened up in the 80 degree water. We surfed past sunset. Mike, from Oregon, grabbed up some Imperials and just about everyone got in the infinity pool and continued to chill.

We gathered for our group orientation in the courtyard to set the week in motion.  After introductions and reminding everyone of teh meaning of  “Tico Time”, we then ate some delicious food and everyone crashed after a full day of travel and excitment. 5:30 am was sure to come fast.
