Man approaching children, ‘Have you seen my lost dog?’

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

With summer approaching and kids getting ready to be out of school it is vital to speak with your children about being aware of their surroundings. Teaching them to not speak with strangers and to instead turn to trusted adults is always a good precaution. As safety is our number one priority we just wanted to increase awareness of a local in post from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office and WECT News 6…

“PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender County Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify a man who has approached a number of children asking if they have seen his lost puppy.

Two young girls reported they were approached by a middle aged man while they were playing in their neighborhood near North Topsail Elementary Saturday afternoon. They said the man asked them if they had seen his “lost dog.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the two girls ran home to tell their parents about the situation. An older brother of one of the girls stayed behind in effort to get a tag number on the vehicle the man was driving, but lost sight of it before seeing the plate number.

Deputies say the man has been seen by several individuals ranging in age from 9 to 17. He is described as a white male in his mid 40s with a mustache and stained teeth. Witnesses told authorities the man was driving an older model, dark green, sports utility type vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said they have been hearing rumors of similar incidents taking place in both Pender and New Hanover Counties over the past two weeks, but have been unable to trace the source of the additional accounts.

Pender County Detective Scott Lawson says parents need to take the time to talk to their children about being aware of their surroundings and quickly alerting a trusted adult if something happens that makes them uncomfortable.

Anyone who recognizes the man depicted to the right is asked to contact Detective Lawson at (910) 259-1438.”

WB Surf Camp Gives Back – Holiday Helpers

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

As the summer creeps closer and the air warms up more each day, the season of Christmas slinks steadily into the past, while equally maintaining its distance in the future. Sometimes, with the change in seasons, the desire to give, share, and lend a helping hand to those in need during the holidays slips through a time warp as well. In an effort to maintain a grip on the heart behind those feelings, WB Surf Camp is moving forward this summer with several initiatives to make a difference and help change lives “one wave at a time”. The first of these actually began last Christmas with the Holiday Helpers program through the Cape Fear Community College Foundation.

Reminiscing back to this past winter, the staff at WB Surf Camp recalled the great time they had raising money for and getting to meet the family they supported. It is such a seemingly simple idea, yet enacting the idea is something completely different. Each year the Holiday Helpers program allows individuals and organizations in our community who wish to provide holiday gifts to those in need the ability to do so.  This program specifically provides for current CFCC students who demonstrate financial needs so that they are able to have a killer Christmas with presents under the tree; something many families, including my own, take for granted. As WB Surf Camp began raising money and collecting donations from its staff of instructors they also began planning their end of the year Christmas party. It only made sense to combine the two and invite the family they were sponsoring.

Making a donation to a nameless or faceless entity doesn’t come close to meeting and spending time with those you are giving to. Getting to meet the family was awesome, as everyone brought a covered dish, the family was given some cold weather Surf Camp gear, and a few gifts were slipped to the mom for sneaking under the tree on Christmas morning for her daughter. The family had a great time, as did the entire Surf Camp team, and everyone is looking forward to next year.
