Costa Rica Day 4 – Client Arrival Day

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Jason, Jimmy and I decided to sleep in (if you call 8:00 am sleeping in). When you have a 2 year-old and an 8 month old at home you could not sleep past 7:00 am if you tried. With an unreal swell on the way and double sessions for the next 6 days, the rest would definitely be needed. We spent most of the day running errands, checking on eateries, reviewing client backgrounds, double checking flights and prepping rooms for everyone’s arrival. By 4:00 pm all was accounted for, including luggage.

We caught up on the past year, met new faces and all went or a surf. Tonight the surf was small, around waist high so everyone just got loosened up in the 80 degree water. We surfed past sunset. Mike, from Oregon, grabbed up some Imperials and just about everyone got in the infinity pool and continued to chill.

We gathered for our group orientation in the courtyard to set the week in motion.  After introductions and reminding everyone of teh meaning of  “Tico Time”, we then ate some delicious food and everyone crashed after a full day of travel and excitment. 5:30 am was sure to come fast.

Costa Rica Day 3 – Prepping for the Week

Friday, January 30th, 2009

It was another early morning. I heard a knock on my door at 5:30 am, it was my friends from Holland. I lathered up with sunscreen, grabbed my board and headed to the beach (yes, I slept with my trunks on). It was another perfect day, light offshore winds, a rising tide and chest to occasionally head high surf.

I was riding a twinzer Firewire fish, and I was just getting used to how it performed. I surfed for another 3+ hours until the tide started to drop. Before paddling out I took 2 Advil because my ribs were starting to feel it from the long hours in the water. It was another great session and I got more waves than I could count!

After breakfast and another “business” meeting, I headed into Tamarindo. Upon arrival at our Costa Rica Surf Camp accommodations I saw Jimmy, our team instructor, who had just arrived from NC. A short while later, Jason, one of our guests, also came in. We grabbed boards and surfed past sunset. The waves were super glassy and the wind was light offshore.  The crowd was thin so we got all the waves we wanted.  It was a longboard session so we gave our shortboards a rest. At this point we were all pretty exhausted so we ate some killer sushi, and hit the sack. Tomorrow is an exciting day with the rest of our clients arriving.

After a crazy busy day at work I was finally all packed up by 10:30 pm. This is good for me because usually I am not done packing for a trip until midnight. My first flight from Wilmington was on time and I slept. From Atlanta I jumped onto a flight straight to Liberia, Costa Rica. Luckily, everything was smooth and on time. I landed, got my luggage, and as I walked out of the airport I saw my name on a sign and my driver took me straight to my accommodations. For my “pre trip days” I was staying in Playa Grande.

As soon as I checked into my room I put on my trunks, waxed my board, and walked to the ocean. Wow…80 degree water felt really amazing! The surf was super fun and I stayed in the water until the sun set. Part of the magic of surf travel is meeting new people and realizing how small the world is. On my last trip to Costa Rica I met a really cool videographer named Jonathan and saw him in the water when I paddled out. We caught up on the past year and just traded waves. So cool and it makes you understand how small a world it really is.  I surfed untill it was dark, I could not get out of the water.  After surfing, I walked back to the hotel, put down my board, and cracked an icy cold Imperial and sat in the pool. My skin was so shriveled from being wet for so long my fingers looked like they were 90 years old

My friend, who now runs the hotel I was staying at, gave me the grand tour and we sat down and got caught up on the past year. He hired a chef who prepared an AMAZING 6 course dinner that was off the hook! We had a table of 10 and sat there for hours as the wine flowed and stories were told. I met two great couples from Holland. One was a Marine Biologist and the other a Coastal Ecologist, so it was really cool to talk shop. 10:00 pm came and I was shot from the day and had plans to wake up at 5:00 am and get in the surf. Goodnight
